A Conscious Conscience

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi believes that if firms only focus on how much money they can make, and not about their affect on the community and employees, then many will never enjoy their work. I agree that for the most part if a firm does everything it can to make a quick buck there are generally some business practices that would make anyone not enjoy what they do. However, what Mihaly is asking goes against how public corporations are set up today, what he wants is a conscientious shareholder. Trying to convince a shareholder to pay workers more or donate money to the community is probably the hardest job an executive can have. They have no personal connection with the employees or even where the company operates, all they know is that they put money into the company and expect money out. In an ideal society everyone would be willing to make less for the happiness of others. Yet, that’s not how it works and I don’t think that’s how it will ever work. I think the harder and more useful path to solve how to give meaning to ones work life is to come up with ways to find meaning within the machine, not to try and change it.
